What is the Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program?
The Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (FFL) Program was developed by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) in partnership with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
The program provides science-based guidelines that help homeowners and professionals maintain attractive landscapes while conserving water and protecting Florida’s natural resources. These practices are designed specifically for Florida’s soils, climate, and waterways—making them both practical and effective for long-term lawn health.
Conserve water
Florida’s drinking water comes primarily from the Floridan Aquifer, which is under increasing demand. Outdoor irrigation can account for over half of household water use. Florida-Friendly Landscaping emphasizes efficient watering practices that reduce waste while keeping landscapes healthy and vibrant.
Reduce fertilizer and pesticide use
Excess fertilizer runoff contributes to water pollution and harmful algae blooms. Florida-Friendly practices promote responsible fertilizer use, seasonal timing, and proper application to protect lakes, rivers, and springs while still supporting healthy plant growth.
Protect Florida’s natural water bodies
